An inclusive girls’ music camp is happening this summer in El Paso

El Paso, TX (KTSM) – El Paso Community Foundation and Boys & Girls Club El Paso present the first You Rock! Music Camp is a comprehensive youth-focused music and empowerment camp for girls ages 10-18.

Camp will be held from July 10th to July 21st from 10am to 4pm at the El Paso Boys & Girls Club at 801 S. Florence St.

According to the news release announcing the camp, Spartan resident Jim Ward, his wife Christine Ward, and the El Paso Community Foundation have been working on the camp for years.

Campers form a band, write their own songs, learn to play an instrument, and eventually perform live on stage during the final week of camp.

Attendees will also participate in workshops on a wide range of themes, including self-esteem and female punk pioneers.

“Our aim is to enable young girls and those who identify as such to experience the fun and camaraderie that comes from sharing a musical adventure. I hope the seeds are planted, the bands I’ve been in have given me some of the best moments of my life, and I hope that I can help future generations have the same experience. I think,” said Jim Ward.

El Paso Community Foundation President and CEO Eric Pearson understands the importance of camps that specifically cater to those who have been historically overlooked.

“This camp is more than just a music camp, it incorporates all the tenets of what it means to be a good member of a community through leadership and team building. Music is a very important part of what it means to be human. I am,” Pearson said.

Applications are being accepted, but space is limited.Scholarships are available for the camp
