Rap fans were both impressed and baffled when 81-year-old Barbra Streisand took to Twitter to quote New York rapper Memphis Bleek.
Streisand has long had a reputation as a political activist, tweeting dire warnings about a possible future presidential run against Donald Trump. “Trump will be charged with stealing classified documents,” she wrote. “He’s going crazy with a tweet calling his cult to ‘fight’. We remember what happened on January 6th. of Memphis Brig. (The lyrics in question are from a compilation album led by Jay-Z.) dynasty“1-900-HUSTLER” featuring Beanie Sigel, Memphis Brig and Freeway).

Though largely recognized within the culture as a protégé of Jay-Z in the late 90s and early 2000s, Bleek had an extensive solo career, recording songs like “Is That You Chick” and “Like That.” Released minor hits such as But he was never a prominent figure in the mainstream charts, and fans were more frustrated with Streisand quoting him than anyone else.
However, the idea that Streisand was a huge Memphis Brig fan turned out to be a source of entertainment. It’s a lot like Sharon Stone wearing movie props and being labeled a fan of underground rapper MF DOOM.
