tune up

Anna We were both on time. He was already seated when I arrived.

Chris I was nervous, so I texted my friends while I waited for my date to show up. , was guessing who the date was.

Anna I thought he was cute/cool. He was nicely dressed. At first glance, I remember thinking that he was friendly and kind.

Chris tall! Or a little taller than me and good looking. She had long hair and looked friendly.

Take a memo

Anna Turns out my date was also from the Bay Area. It was fun talking to him about his experience moving to Boston for school.During COVID, we both moved back to California to discover that we were living with family.

Chris We were from the same area.I’m a music major and she asked me what I know [live music events company] There is Sofar Sounds and I have done some work for Sofar. She persuaded her parents to help her host a sofa event in her backyard in Palo Alto, California.

Anna We both enjoy music. He is more interested in classical music and is classically trained. He has a keyboard, but he can only play basic chords. He did a lot of art in high school. Growing up I played many sports. He said he ran cross-country. We talked a little bit about running.

Chris She played and still does volleyball and pickleball.

Anna Playing sports is a pretty big part of my life, so I was a little disappointed not to be able to share it, but it wasn’t a deal breaker.

Chris For me it felt like we were at different points in life. We had a lot to talk about, but we didn’t have much in common.

Anna We shared appetizers of crispy tofu and Japanese fried chicken. He ordered the sashimi and I ordered the sushi roll combo. The food was delicious and the service was good.

Chris I thought the food was pretty good overall! We were both pretty full by the end.

Anna Personally, I didn’t feel an emotional connection with him as the night wore on. He is definitely a very ambitious and driven person, a charming quality. Conversation remained at a fairly superficial level. This is what to expect on a first date.

Chris I could see her as someone who knew me well. But for me, there was no immediate chemistry.

Denouement

Anna Towards the end, I was tired and ready to wrap up, I called an Uber so we made small talk while we waited. I wished him luck the next night at his poetry reading. He remained seated when I got up.

Chris I said nice to meet her. Good luck to her. We said goodbye from across the table.

Second date?

Anna I do not think so. I wish him luck!

Chris I don’t think so; we haven’t exchanged contact information.
