Authorities are evacuating Eatonton residents after a gas line cut on Imperial Mill Road. Eatonton Fire Chief Eugene Hubert said a working contractor hit the line and caused the leak.
Eatonton Police Chief Howell Cardwell said a 4-inch gas pipe struck near the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on the 100 block of Imperial Mill Road.
The road between North Jefferson Avenue and the US 441 Bypass is currently closed.
Hubert and Cardwell said gas company employees are making repairs on-site.

Eatonton Fire Chief Eugene Hubert said at 5:10 p.m. that the gas leak was still ongoing. Other valves along the line are off, so the danger is not as great as when the first break occurred at 3:00 PM. He said people should still avoid the area.
