The BRICs are participating in activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. The company announced Friday it plans to celebrate hip-hop’s birthday with two days of so-called “thoughtful and dedicated” programming.
The event will be held at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!, New York’s longest-running free performing arts festival. On his August 11th anniversary of hip-hop’s birth, iconic rap group Diggable Planets and rapper Califor will hit the stage at the outdoor festival at the Lena Horne Bandshell at Prospect His Park. In a press statement released today, Digable Planets’ Ish “Butterfly” Butler said:
“Hip-hop has given us everything we love, work and belong.”
The next day, August 12th, hip-hop and movie lovers can enjoy a screening of a romantic comedy. brown sugar.
With over 45 years of history, BRICs Celebrate Brooklyn! has become a go-to platform for artists from a wide variety of genres, many of whom have gone on to become world-famous stars. This year will include benefit concerts featuring NxWorries, Robert Glasper, BJ The Chicago Kid and Kerela, to name a few.
For BRIC President Wes Jackson, this year’s BCB is just the beginning of a program planned for the year that includes celebrating different aspects of hip-hop’s most important anniversary.
