Dr Dre to receive first Hip-Hop Icon Award from music industry group ASCAP

Dr. Dre will need to make room in his trophy case for another prestigious award.

The American Association of Composers, Writers and Publishers announced Tuesday that he will receive the inaugural ASCAP Hip-Hop Icon Award.

Dr. Dre will be honored at the organization’s Rhythm & Soul Music Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday.

ASCAP President and Chairman Paul Williams said: “Dr Dre’s early and groundbreaking work laid the foundation for hip-hop as we know it today.

“As an advocate for today’s greatest artist and a successful entrepreneur, he changed the culture around hip-hop.”

The honor Dre receives is given to ASCAP members whose musical contributions have made an “indelible impact” on the art and culture of hip-hop.

DJ Kid Capri and DJ Drama will provide music for Thursday’s event celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.

A seven-time Grammy Award winner, Dr. Dre has produced huge hits for Jay-Z, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Nas and 50 Cent.

Last year’s Super Bowl halftime performance earned him his first Emmy Award for performing alongside Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Lamar and 50 Cent.

The prolific producer has emerged from the West Coast gangster rap scene alongside Eazy-E and Ice Cube as part of NWA, a group that left its mark on hip-hop culture and the music industry with their controversial lyrics in the late 1980s. Appeared.

Earlier this year, Dr. Dre celebrated The Chronic’s 30th anniversary by re-releasing their acclaimed debut studio album.

In 2010, he received ASCAP’s Founder’s Award.
