The ETSU Music Department has announced that Knoxville Symphony Orchestra concertmaster William Schaub has been appointed co-director of the ETSU Chamber Music Festival.
After two seasons of the festival showing “extraordinary success” attracting talented students and a notable faculty, according to organizers, Chaub joined Sean Hawthorne, who helped found the festival alongside Dr. David Kovac in 2019. In addition to being concertmaster of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Schaub is a frequent guest concertmaster around the world. But he knows his ETSU well, and he’s been performing with the Johnson City faculty since he arrived in 2017.
He said the biggest attraction of the festival is its uniqueness.
“We have what our students need to experience: a truly gorgeous concert hall (ETSU Martin Center for the Arts), a week of fun and intense work, and a round-the-clock student experience like a family. A faculty that helps you grow,” he said. “This combination is something that David and I truly believe in for our students.”
Schaub said his experience studying with the legendary Takachi Quartet at the Music Academy of the West influenced his vision for music festivals.
“They worked with the students like a supportive family, each member trying to build you up. That’s what we want to do as teachers at Chamber Festival. I want to go out into the world with more confidence than I did when I came in,” he said.
