Grandmaster Flash has long been considered one of the founding fathers of the genre we now know as hip-hop, but he doesn’t take kindly to would-be fans who don’t know their history.
in an interview with shade 45the pioneering DJ shared on his TikTok page on Thursday (June 15) and later on his Instagram page, the Furious Five leader gave his hosts a little education while also doing it. Not including the key players in hip-hop’s 50th anniversary celebration who decided to drag in ignorant would-be fans.
“Can you verbalize this?” he began. “There was only one gentleman with this nursery rhyme style. There was only one. And we met briefly. And I went to see my girlfriend and he was there.” he was dating my sister and i was dating my sister we will see each other again and next time we play in the park i will ask you to try and here is the rapper It’s where I was born.”
He continued, “His name was Keith Wiggins, aka ‘Cowboy’. […] The remaining 5 are a thing of the past. But I just wanted to say, “Thank you, Sway.” Yes, I know you have a lot to talk about. But hip-hop is 50 years old. And you know, in all the interviews I’ve heard, no one talks about where this all started.
“Nobody’s talking about the DJ. Nobody’s talking about the great producer who put these great songs together. ‘Cause you’re saying you’re gonna put your life into this, any rapper can write a sick rhyme like this.” that it can’t be [without them]”

Grandmaster Flash is one of the founding fathers of hip-hop, but he’s by no means a Fadi Daddy. In fact, he’s a big fan of both Drake (who called Drake a “genius”) and Glorilla.
hip hop DX We met the trailblazer at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, where he revealed his kids were trying to get him to check out Memphis’ up-and-coming star. Given the chance to hear her hit single “FNF,” Grandmaster Flash readily agreed.
“Okay, Glorilla! That sounds like fun too,” he exclaimed. “She’s shitting and she’s having fun. That’s what hip-hop should be.”
Soon after being introduced to Glorilla’s music, Grandmaster Flash took the stage with the newcomer as part of the Grammy Awards Hip-Hop 50 Tribute.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, Flash was awarded an honorary doctorate in music. DJ was a speaker at Lehman University’s spring 2023 commencement ceremony alongside former New York State Rep. Jose Rivera.
While Rivera delivered a rousing speech about resilience, what really struck a chord was her contribution to hip-hop’s early roots, and in relation to the genre’s 50th anniversary this year: Those were the inspirational words of Grandmaster Flash.
