Ganna returned after a very long hiatus as he stayed away from legal troubles and the public eye. Gunna and the rest of YSL, including founder Young Thug, were indicted in the RICO case in May 2022. After several bail attempts, Ganna was released after a plea bargain.
Very specifically, Gunna eventually accepted Alford’s argument to deny guilt, but admitted the possibility of being convicted of crimes related to the case. But the hip-hop community destroyed everything in the simplest terms by labeling Gunna a snitch. When I hear about a plea bargain from a rapper, the first thing I think about is if that person tipped off. But while Gunna’s campaign was trying to deny those allegations, a courtroom video of Gunna talking to prosecutors surfaced with some interesting quotes.
This has led many rappers to oppose accepting Gunna into the hip-hop community. From Boosey to Lil Dark, road rules are broken in their eyes, and there’s no room for “rats” in this culture (6ix9ine is a prime example).
About a year has passed since I received a call from Ms. Gunna after she was released. He didn’t lock himself in and release music like many rappers have done. We were all waiting to see what he would say and how he would deal with the “elephant in the room.”
The title of the new song, “Bread and Butter,” casts a stain on his name and attacks those who try to stop him from making music. They’re about to pick up on his “bread and butter” rap, which is a good title to address the outpouring of hate from the hip-hop community.
Gunna does not use specific names, but connecting the dots seems to refer to specific people. One of her lyrics that lumps everyone into the same pot is “You bastard chose me to chat about,” which sounds like Lil Dark on DJ Academics. It’s aimed at people. A show that claims Gunna to be a “rat”. But the most intriguing part of the first verse is when he shoots a gun at one of his old friends, Lil Baby.
“You’re still fucking with ***a who got a partner***[whacked]”
– Gunna talks about ‘bread and butter’
The line above suggests that Gunna may be firing at Lil Baby for dating someone who murdered her friend Lil Mario in 2020. Rumors point to 21 Savage and his gang being involved in the murder, but Lil Baby apparently still stays cool with 21 Savage. Gunna finds it hypocritical that people are turning their backs on him when he has a similar skeleton in his closet.
The second section goes into more detail about the legal side of things. He says his lawyer tricked him into pleading and regrets it. He feels taken advantage of in this whole situation. Towards the end of the poem, he informs us that this will be the last time he touches on this subject as he moves forward in his career.
Overall the song itself is great. Gunna is very talented and this further solidifies the idea. He had to deal with all this and he did it in the best possible way. Perhaps this is Gunna’s way of regaining her place in hip-hop. Will the industry accept this situation as legitimate? only time will tell.
