Born Dwight Arrington Myers in Jamaica, Heavy D moved with his family to Mount Vernon at a young age, where he discovered his passion for rap music.
His astonishing talent soon made him an integral part of the local hip-hop scene, and eventually achieved recognition on a global scale. Selected through a competitive process overseen by ArtsWestchester, a prominent advocate of public art, the sculpture, aptly titled “Peaceful Journey,” was created by esteemed Brooklyn-based artist Eto Otitgbe.
Located at the busy intersection of Broad Street and Fleetwood Avenue, the artwork provides a visible symbol of homage to Heavy D’s influence.
Otitgbe said the purpose of the sculpture was to pay tribute to the profound impact Mount Vernon, the Bronx and Los Angeles had on the lives of black and brown people, and is poignantly depicted in the music of Heavy D. I explained that it was the theme.
Peaceful Journey’s Ottigbe said, “With this piece of art, we wanted to pay tribute to the Mount Vernon community, which has held such an important place in hip-hop.
The unveiling was attended by Heavy D’s family, including his mother, Eurale Myers, to thank the artwork. Heavy D’s mother shared her son’s deep love for her art and her unwavering love for Mount Vernon.
Reflecting on this opportunity, she said:
Mayor Patterson Howard also addressed the audience, acknowledging Heavy D’s significant contribution to the city’s cultural fabric.
“Heavy D holds a special place in Mount Vernon and hip-hop history. This sculpture is a fitting homage to his legacy and hip-hop’s 50th anniversary.”
Tragically, Heavy D’s life was cut short at age 44, leaving an indelible void in the music industry.
In November 2011, he tragically passed away from complications of cardiovascular disease and a blood clot in his lungs from a long flight, shocking his fans and fellow artists.
His unexpected and sudden death is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the lasting impact of his artistry.
After Heavy D’s untimely departure, his memory lives on through his enduring music and profound influence on Mount Vernon and the hip-hop community.
The “Peaceful Journey” sculpture is a poignant homage to his legacy and a reminder to all who see the legendary rapper’s vibrant spirit and immense talent.
