“‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ is a song about the ups and downs of my own spiritual journey. It’s about finding hope and meaning in life when things get dark,” said Bourne. I says
Meditation teacher and hip-hop artist Born I (Ofosu Jones-Quartey) has released a new song and accompanying music video “Om Mani” as a tribute to the late Vietnamese Buddhist teacher and founder of the Engaged Buddhist movement. Padme Hum (Tribute)” was released. , Thich Nhat Hanh, who passed away in January 2022.
The song is the first single from Born I’s upcoming EP, which will be released in August 2023. Filmed in one day by videographer Tim Shelby, the video serves as “a simple, emotional, visual meditation on connecting with nature.” In the video, footage from Born I is interspersed with documentary footage of Thich Nhat Hanh by filmmaker Max Pugh.
When asked about the story and meaning behind the new single “Born,” I told Lion’s Roar:
When one of my beloved teachers, Thich Nhat Hanh (aka Thay), passed away last year, my friend and producer Daniel Koletcher (DaRC) gave me the idea to write a song to pay tribute to Thay. shared it with me. I also saw this song as an opportunity for Tay and I to discuss our paths with each other. Thus “Om Mani Padme Hum (Tribute)” was born. Later that year, I visited Plum Village Abbey in France for the first time and performed “Om Mani Padmé Hum” at the end of the Abbey’s 40th anniversary celebrations. A deeper connection was made and we decided to release the song as a single and video.
“Om Mani Padme Hum” is a song about the ups and downs of my own spiritual journey. It’s about finding hope and meaning in life when things get dark. Through this song, I am supported by Tay’s words. In a sense, “Om Mani Padme Hum” is a conversation between the student’s quest and the teacher’s wisdom.
In April, I participated in the Plum Village Abbey fundraising concert tour, traveling through four North American cities and offering an evening of music, poetry, and teachings of the law.
