The University of Pittsburgh has partnered with 1HoodMedia to mark the 50th anniversary of the emergence of hip-hop.
“This Thing We Call Hip-Hop” takes place at the Black Box Theater at 460 Melwood Avenue, Auckland.
Artists and academics gather for discussions hosted by Shantell Petersen, known as “Popchanny,” to discuss the genre’s importance, its development over time, and Pittsburgh’s influence on the genre.
It will feature Fedd the God, Hardo, Paradise Gray, SpeciàlK, as well as Dr. Margaret J. Starks, known as “Principal Rapp.”
Fed the God, 26, hails from Northview Heights and began his hip-hop journey in 2005. He recently signed with Taylor Gang under famed rapper Wiz Khalifa.
In 1987, Dr. Margret J. Starks was the first woman in her city to release a rap song. She currently works as an educator and writer in Pittsburgh and is best known for her back-to-school videos.
The event will also feature videos of Pitt alumni, faculty and staff speaking about their experiences with the genre.
Anyone can participate in the event for free. For registration and more information, please visit the event page.
