Hip hop has lost another contributor to the culture. mop affiliate Fox has passed away and her colleagues are paying tribute to her achievements.
Reports say Hip Hop DX The Bronx, New York native transitioned gender. She became synonymous with the MOP brand, known for her work as the group's road manager and contributions to records like “It's Hard To Tell.” Last weekend, DJ Kid Capri took to social media to announce her passing with a very moving Instagram post. “I went to see you at the hospital last night and what I saw there was you coming out of your room crying. About a week ago you had asked us all to come see you by August 2nd, when you wanted to be taken off the ventilator. Yesterday was August 2nd. I would have regretted so much if I hadn't been there,” he wrote.
He went on to reveal that the two grew up together and that she was a member of a rap girl group he formed: “It was fun having you, Kim, Georgia and @qtpepsi rehearse the routines I was writing. After that you really started to get influenced by music. A few years later you hooked up with the amazing hip hop group MOP @famem.op @billydanzem.op.” News of her death quickly spread and her peers celebrated her life.
Longtime collaborator DJ Premier also shared his sadness: “Hurt in so many ways but your pain is gone now. Hard to get a call after seeing you in the hospital on Tuesday. We all miss you so much but the good times are engraved in our hearts. You were hardcore sweet,” the caption read, along with behind the scenes footage from MOP and Gang Starr's 1997 tour.
Fat Joe, Chuck D, The Alchemist, Royce Da 5.9 and Cam'ron also paid tribute online. Fox had been battling the autoimmune disease scleroderma for the past 15 years. He was 55 years old. Watch Fox performing at MOP with Busta Rhymes in 2004 below:
