Komolafe no longer bunked when he attended the revered BRIT School in what he describes as “culture shock.” “Children came from all over the country and for the first week we weren’t sure if we were going to stay, but after waiting a while, we started to solidify. We needed to do these little programs, It got us pretty early on at the college organizing show.”
Komolafe seized the opportunity presented to them and teamed up with older children who had already left school to form an indie band, making a name for themselves playing gigs in pubs and venues across South London.
A few years later, Rarelyalways, signed to LA-based Innovative Leisure, released two EPs in 2020 and 2021, a real achievement. As an anarchic blend of weird electronic music, distorted jazz and soft, brooding hip-hop, the project was essential. Komolafe explains: The engineer took the initiative and came out looking for me and found me drenched. It was a journey. I thought of a name. [of 2020’s debut EP] baby buffalo, Because I was a little fish in a big pond. I wasn’t being bullied, but I felt like I needed to collect all the weapons and tools to survive in this new environment. ”
