In connection with the new release, The Big Takeover briefly chatted with Noel Heroux for an exclusive interview about cover tracks and the future of Hooray For Earth.
How did you approach making ‘jatevee C’ your own?
NH: It’s my own in that I recreated everything I heard in the original using my voice, guitar and live drums. It is very mechanically built from what you collect.
Does this new release hint at what’s next for Hooray For Earth’s sound?
NH: Oh I don’t know! It probably makes sense. If you’re doing what you want to do, you’re avoiding guitar/composing/whatever expectations. So re-recording the Autechre track with what I have works fine.
You recently ran a Bandcamp live stream and most recently opened for Modest Mouse. Coming back on stage, how did you approach that process, both physically and online?
NH: Wow, it was kind of good, and it was also really stressful. Ever since the modest Key came out of an eight-year hiatus, I’ve only taken Hooray For Earth outside when invited. For such occasions, I wanted the show to be unique. It’s okay to try something and it doesn’t work. To the love of each – I love to leave a show/performance/whatever and not know how it ended.
Do you have any other exciting plans to share for the rest of the year? Is there anything you’re particularly excited about going forward?
NH: Yes, Hooray For Earth full length. I started in 2019 and spent as much time as I needed. I hesitate to describe it other than to say that it is a very detailed, careful and vengeful piece of work. <3 <3 <3
