Janelle continued, “Lil’ Kim was challenging everyone’s idea of what it was like to be a black woman, what could or couldn’t be said. She categorizes me, I ignore all labels, and I live by that, that’s why I love her.”

For Janelle, hip-hop goes beyond music to “represent freedom, it tells stories, it represents black people… the black spectrum. So this just represents an opportunity for us to want to continue educating people about who we are as a people and about our experience.”
