Smokey Robinson was on hand to announce Outstanding National Album category for Lizzo’s studio album specialpeaked at number two on the Billboard 200 chart.
These are Lizzo’s first ever Detroit Music Awards, and her ever-growing collection of major trophies includes a Grammy, an MTV Video Music Award, and a People’s Choice Award for “About Dumb Time.”
Lizzo has sent a short video message of approval to organizers, fans and Motor City residents. “How are you guys? It’s been an honor to win one, two, three, four Detroit Music Awards. You know how important this is to me because I’m with Van Dyke “Because I’m from the East Side off Palmetto,” she said.

The awards will be presented on Sunday evening (23 April) at the Emagine Theaters Royal Oak, with a date and platform yet to be announced.

Categories are voted on by a music industry panel made up of professionals working in the Detroit music industry, including musicians, producers, engineers, composers, promoters, venue operators, crew technicians and media.
Artists performing and/or performing in and around Southeastern Michigan, including the Ann Arbor, Flint, and Greater Detroit metropolitan areas, are eligible for the award.
The DMA has been held since 1992 and continued until 2020 when the pandemic intervened.
This year’s event was the fourth virtual show. His 30th anniversary show in 2021 won the Regional Emmy Award for Best Entertainment Program.
