Rosedale, Md. (WBAL) — The life lesson two Rosedale parents are trying to teach their 11-year-old son is that hard work pays off. They promised to give him a special gift if he achieved an honor roll.

DJ Morris, also known as “Lil Syxx,” is about to launch his rapping career. He was only 11 years old when he produced his videos for rap music with the help of his parents. If he achieves an honor roll, it’s the reward his parents promised him.

“I wasn’t doing very well, so when they got the idea. I just had to be good,” said DJ, a fifth grader at Shady Springs Elementary School.

“DJ had a bit of trouble with some of his school subjects,” said his father, Brandon Morris. “We were thinking of robbing something, robbing the TV, robbing the video game, to see if it would work, but it didn’t really work. I decided to do something positive for myself. Let’s try positive reinforcement.”

The idea started when DJ was a third grader at Shady Spring Elementary School. His parents helped him produce a rap music video about summer.

“But we’ve run out of this virtual school. It’s so cool to chill out on the beach,” DJ raps in his video.

Since then, his parents have owed him another music video as he makes an honorary roll every quarter.

“We asked him what he wanted to talk about. He is very passionate about what he sees in the world, injustice, etc., so this was the topic he chose.

“Let’s go bro, I can’t relax. The world is full of disappointments, but I have your back,” the DJ raps on another song.

DJ’s song “We’re Making Over” is a call to children for the positive change the world needs.

“We are the next generation. Without you guys, we’ll be adults and run the world.

Now, he is dedicated to making good decisions in the classroom and getting good grades.

“I think that being able to get this music video with good grades means that with good grades people can get what they want. I want people to see that. ‘ said the DJ.

DJ’s parents said they rewarded his good grades with music videos and other things he loved. Click the link to watch DJ’s latest music videos, or watch his 3rd grade video.
