A new photozine explores early 1980s hip-hop culture.
“Hip-Hop Years The B Sides 1982-2020” by British-born photographer Janet Beckman features hip-hop artists such as Roxanne Chante, Rakim, Missy Elliott, Scott LaRock, Cash Money and Flavor. There are 36 pages of original black and white photographs of the icons. Flav, EPMD, Kurtis Blow, Salt-N-Pepa, Joey Bada$$, Stetsasonic and more.
This 36-page photozine is a sequel to Beckman’s Hip-Hop Years New York 1982-1992. The book, published last year, focuses on his underground scene and features stars like Run DMC, Salt ‘N Pepa, Chuck D, Slick Rick, and LL Cool J.
Born in London, Beckman moved to New York in the 80s and is known for his music-rooted productions. Besides her photozine and her exhibition work, she has published four of her books to date. ‘Made in the UK, Music of Attitude 1977-1982’, ‘The Breaks Stylin ‘and Profilin’ 1982-1990′, ‘El Hoyo Maravilla’, ‘The Mash Up’ was recreated by legendary graffiti artists. A collection of her hip hop photos interpreted.

Last month, a new photozine released never-before-seen images of the Wu-Tang Clan taken by Eddie Occea over a decade. The book was published by Cafe Royal Books, which also publishes Beckman’s Photozine work exploring hip-hop.
