Norton Music Shop Wins VCEDA Grant
According to a VCEDA news release, Norton’s Music School and Shop, which offers retail sales of musical instruments and accessories as well as lessons, has received a $10,000 seed capital matching grant from the Virginia Coalfields Economic Development Authority.
Owner James Wardell is a former K-12 music teacher and his son, Ryan Tuckett Wardell, is the general manager of the new shop. He stressed the educational side of the business, adding in a Project Review interview, “We are music teachers at heart.”
Jonathan Belcher, VCEDA’s executive director and general counsel, said the new business is expected to employ two full-time employees and 12 part-time employees within five years.
The business maintains studio space and a cadre of music instructors who provide private and group lessons, classes, coaching, and audition preparation.

Governor appoints boards and councils
Governor Glenn Youngkin last week announced a number of new board and council appointments, including several from the Southwest and Southside states.
- Lauren Woodson Mr. Roanoke, Community Recreation Coordinator for Parks and Recreation in Roanoke, has been appointed to the Executive Mansion’s Citizens Advisory Board on Facilities and Interpretation.
- nancy age Mr. Salem, President and CEO, Carillion Clinic, Emily O’Quinn Senior Vice President of Alpha Metallurgical Resources of Bristol has been appointed to the Virginia Growth and Opportunity Commission.
- Betsy Beamer Henrico, Director of Planning and Organization at McGuireWoods Consulting, has been appointed to the Radford University Visitors Committee.
- Robin Diurio An engineer at KBR Inc. in Montgomery County, he was appointed to the Criminal Justice Services Commission.

Virginia Museum of History and Culture Seeks Opinion on Vietnam Exhibit
The Virginia Museum of History and Culture in Richmond has renewed its invitation to Virginians with personal ties to the Vietnam War to contribute to a new exhibition.
“Virginia and the Vietnam War” allows visitors to immerse themselves in the experiences of the Virginians during the Vietnam War. The museum hopes to interview Virginians who have experienced the war as veterans, activists, refugees, and military families. Recorded interviews and transcripts will be included in the exhibit and added to the museum’s oral history collection.
“Virginia and the Vietnam War” opens to the public on November 23, 2024 and will be on display until April 27, 2025. Those interested in participating can learn more at VirginiaHistory.org/VAVietnam.

Eight Companies Win Funding in Competition at Danville-Pittsylvania Chamber of Commerce
A new cabinet design business and expanding day care center won first prize in the Danville-Pitsylvania County Chamber of Commerce’s 2023 Rev Up Danville Pittsylvia competition.
Eight small businesses were awarded $77,000 for opening or expanding operations in two regions, according to a news release from the Chamber of Commerce.
The Rev Up program helps small business owners develop a business plan and work with mentors to create a business proposal.
16 companies participated in the competition. Here are the winners:
- Little Bird Daycare, owner Chasity Phillips, $15,000.
- Design To A ‘T’, owner Tyler Harrell, $15,000 plus $1,000 from Movement Bank.
- Trey Belcher Training, owner Trey Belcher, $10,000.
- Nicholas Drone Service, owner Nicholas Carty, $10,000.
- Hammer Hill Computers, owner Steve Barrow, $10,000 plus $1,000 from Movement Bank.
- Fitz Over Food, owner Terry Fitzgerald, $8,000.
- Little House Esthetics, owner Connor Finney, $5,000.
- Heritage Salon & Company, owner LaShawn Walker, $2,000.
Rev Up Danville Pittsylvonia completed its third year with 32 proposed business plans.
Provided a total of $175,000 to judges. In the fourth year of the program,

Brent Cobb and Carlene Carter have joined the lineup for the three-day Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion.
In addition to the single ‘Any Day’ pass, a daily schedule for the festival, which runs from September 8th to 10th, has also been announced and is on sale for $70 plus tax/fees. A full artist schedule, including set times and stages, will be announced later in the summer.
