Richmond resident awarded prestigious music scholarship


Richmond resident Elijah Hutman has been selected as the recipient of the Philane Music Scholarship at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. He is a graduate of Holdale High School. Mr. Hutman was selected as one of 26 finalists from a field of applicants. Scholarship winners are selected each year from among the finalists of the Filene Music Competition held on campus.

In high school, Hutman was a member of the National Honor Society and the Music Honor Society, Tri-M, and was a senior senator. He graduated with honors, participated in jazz bands, jazz choirs, bands, choirs, and had lead roles in musical theater during his high school years. He was co-captain of the taiko group. He was named Principal Oboe of the All-Eastern Honors Band in the 12th grade, Principal Oboe of the All-National Honors Ensemble Orchestra in the 10th grade, and Principal Oboe of the All-State Band and Orchestra for all four years. rice field. Hutman was selected to the All-American Jazz Choir during his eleventh grade. He also won the 2nd Place Friends Award at the Bangor Symphony Maine High School Concerto Competition in February.

Hutman is also active as a community musician. He performed with the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra in the 2022-23 season and played viola with the Pitt Orchestra in The Sound of Music at the Waterville Opera House. He performed with the Mid Main Youth Orchestra from grades 7-12 and with the Mozart Mentors Orchestra from grades 9-12. He has also performed with the Pineland Fiddlers, the Kennebec Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Augusta Symphony Orchestra in the past.

Hutman will enter Skidmore College in the fall, majoring in studio art and anthropology, with a minor in music.

The Philane Music Program has been an integral part of Skidmore College for over 35 years, thanks to the generous generosity of the Lincoln & Therese Philane Foundation and the Rudd Charitable Corporation. According to a prepared release, the program will offer four-year scholarships to outstanding academics and musicians who are free to pursue any course of study at Skidmore College, which has one of the best liberal arts music programs in the country.
