San Francisco’s Webster Street neighborhood, where Safeway is located, seems to be having trouble sleeping because of the local grocery store. SFGATE reports that the grocery giant has decided to play classical music in its parking lot for at least a week to “deter loitering.” The music is being broadcast by the store’s mobile surveillance unit, which neighbors say makes the area “the worst place to sleep at night.”
As SFGATE points out, this was likely implemented to combat the homeless, and was implemented in other areas, including the Los Angeles subway and Burger King’s Market Street location in 2016. Safeway said in a statement. The security department monitors parking lot movement through surveillance cameras, and classical music is meant to discourage loitering, he said, stressing that this was “common practice in the industry”. At this time, supervisor Dean Preston stepped in to contact Safeway about the volume and length of the music.
Take a trip to Spain at one of San Francisco’s favorite wine bars
Rather than spending time planning your European vacation this fall, let San Francisco’s El Lopo be your guide. The wine bar is inviting friends and customers on a company trip to Spain in October. You can only expect (perhaps) the best eateries there. El Lopo has detailed the itinerary through its website, which includes stops in cities such as Madrid, Rias Baixas, Seville and Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
Shared culture seeking new production buildings
Since its founding in 2020, Bay Area miso lovers Shared Cultures has been serving Bay Area chefs and restaurants with a unique style of low-batch miso and tamari. But now, the couple behind the brand appear to be seeking leads in new areas for their business. They are one of six tenants who have been asked to vacate their current building within 60 days. In her second post to Instagram, they revealed her needs for business. This includes approximately 3,000 square feet of manufacturing zoned space.
California newly added to Michelin Guide
On June 6th, a new restaurant was added to Michelin’s California Dining Guide. Ten restaurants across Southern California, including Los Angeles, Santa Monica, San Diego and Orange County, were named “new” in the guide. With 19 more Bay Area restaurants added to the guide in May and a Korean restaurant Bangsan added to the guide in March, it’s no surprise Tuesday’s announcement greatly skewed Southern California. The Michelin star, Bib Gourmand and other Michelin awards will be announced at a ceremony on July 18 at Chabot Space Science Center in Auckland.
Oh, and ICYMI…
A small gathering of chefs and restaurants was held in Chicago last night. Several awards were given. But nobody went to the Bay Area if you care about such things.
