SIU’s Outside the Box new music festival opens March 24

CARBONDALE, Illinois — Continuing a rich history of hosting internationally renowned musicians and performers, Southern Illinois University Carbondale will host Outside the Box 2023, a new music festival later this month that will host a region-wide Music lovers can enjoy their interest and influence in music. to campus.

Now in its 16th year, the festival runs March 24-31 on campus and at various Carbondale locations. All workshops and concerts are open to the public and admission is free.

Grammy Award-winning Third Coast Percussion will showcase their latest productions as they kick off the festivities on Friday, March 24 at 7:00 PM. His SIU Wind Ensemble, conducted by Professor Christopher Morehouse and his SIU’s Band Director, will then join for the Southern Illinois premiere. A work co-commissioned by American composer David T. Little’s 2015 arrangement of “Radiant Child” by his SIU.

This year, almost all faculty members of the music department have contributed to the festival, including the university’s brass band and concert choir, said Christopher Wall, associate professor of music theory and composition in the music department at the University of the Arts.
