Sprite has brought together hip-hop royalty to celebrate music’s 50th anniversary with a new TV commercial that goes back to the genre’s beginnings.
In the new spot, rappers Nas, Rakim, Rat, and Glorilla recite a remixed version of the Sugarhill Gang’s classic “Rapper’s Delight.” Throughout the commercial, the artists are depicted rapping old and new lyrics in a variety of settings, including recording studios, stages, classrooms and streets. Throughout the spot, rappers are depicted drinking Sprite and inspiring others. “We’ve been thrilling our fans underground and overground / 50 years on, rappers rejoice,” Nas said at the end of the spot.
In addition to the commercial, the brand is also introducing a limited edition flavor, Limonade Legacy. This extension is Sprite’s take on Strawberry Lemonade and was inspired by a fan’s social media request. The flavor is sold at retail stores during the summer months, and is only available in fountain and frozen formats at 7-Eleven stores.
The brand also offers new packaging inspired by boomboxes, studio mixers and other technology tools synonymous with hip-hop culture. Use his QR code inside the pack to unlock hundreds of digital prizes, including his autographed Nas hat, GloRilla tour t-shirt, Latto’s gold microphone, and Rakim’s slate from a TV commercial shoot. You can access the “Drop Shop”.
Sprite is also the primary beverage sponsor of Drake’s “It’s all a Blur” summer tour, continuing a partnership that began in 2012. As part of the sponsorship, the brand will distribute meet-and-greet tickets for the tour.
“Our ‘Summer of Drops’ will focus on fan passion points such as music, fashion, art and entertainment, and bring sneakerheads to the world,” said Aaliyah Shafik Ealy, VP of Sparkling Flavors at the brand. Inspired by drop culture,” he said in a release. “The variety of prizes offers something to excite everyone, and our entire campaign is the latest example of Sprite answering what fans are looking for in both experiences and products.”
