StarPhoenix is one of nine organizations in the country that have been nominated for multiple NNAs. The finalist was selected by a panel of three judges in 23 categories from a total of 923 entries submitted by 76 media outlets for works to be published in 2022.

On September 4, 2022, 11 people aged 23 to 78 were killed and 18 injured when Miles Sanderson went on a rampage in the James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon. The search for Sanderson, identified by the RCMP as the sole perpetrator of the stabbing, continued until September 7, when he died shortly after being taken into police custody.
In the 36 hours since the RCMP’s first Dangerous Persons warning, StarPhoenix and Leader-Post staff have updated the two live files more than 200 times. Similarly, reporters and editors, within his first 36 hours, he also submitted five articles and numerous photographs.
Other contenders in the breaking news category are The Canadian Press for covering the so-called Freedom Convoy for 36 hours after the first truck arrived in Ottawa. La Presse’s team covered the arrest of three of his high school basketball coaches accused of sex crimes.

Berg in the breaking news photography category was nominated for what the NNA called “a chilling image of a man staring into the camera while being arrested”.
The other nominee in this category was Toronto Star’s Steve Russell, who was pictured in a confrontation between police and Freedom Convoy protesters. Anton Skyba of the Globe and Mail provided an image of a young girl standing in front of the wreckage of an apartment building destroyed on the first night of the war in Ukraine.
The Saskatchewan nomination is two of eight nominations Postmedia received this year.
The NNA was founded in 1949 by the Toronto Press Club. This award honors the best journalism from Canadian dailies, regional newspapers, and digital organizations that publish original content five or more days a week.
Winners will be announced at a live gala in Toronto on May 5th.
