A teenage boy has been jailed for at least 15 years for murdering a “quiet” and “popular” 17-year-old in a gang vehicle glorified in a drill rap video.
George Macia, 18, has been convicted of stabbing Boubacar Jabby Doucre, who was murdered a few meters from his home in Walthamstow, east London.
The victim, known as Buba, was attacked by five teenagers on the night of October 23, 2020, before being stabbed in the chest and lying in a pool of blood on his doorstep.
Following previous trials, Samuel Bathory, 19, Jamal Dakisaga Benitez, 19, Alfie Ferguson, 19, and Kaiyan Decodova, 20, were convicted of murder.
Makia, who was 15 at the time, did not participate in the trial as her family had taken her abroad and only returned to the UK a week before the trial began.
The defendant from Walthamstow, who has been identified since he turned 18, denied any involvement, was convicted of murder in January.
In a statement on the impact on victims, Baba’s “devastated” parents and siblings described Baba as a loving, friendly, popular and quiet young man.
His mother Haja Ducre said the “vile murderers” not only took Baba’s life, but ruined the lives of his family by their “evil barbaric” deeds.
“We hope and pray that Baba’s justice will prevail.”
his brother said:Seeing him like this is what we remember – our brother lies in his blood
“This has had a huge impact on our lives and we are still saddened by what happened to Baba.”
On Friday, Anuja Dhir KC Judge detained Maquia with a minimum sentence of 15 years to life.
She told Makia:
“Boubakal Ducre was not the intended target, he was just there. And you, along with others in your group, killed him. Your victim was defenseless and unarmed. bottom.
“In my judgment, it is clear that you were all working together. You were working as a team in concert, regardless of who was holding the knife.
Earlier, prosecutor James Dawes KC said how CCTV identified the attackers, two on bicycles and three on foot.
The attackers were associated with the Higham Hill or Priory Court Boys gangs and were at odds with a neighboring gang called the Drive Marlowe. St. James or Mali Boys.
Mr Dawes said:
Jurors were played a video clip that was found on defendant Ferguson’s phone and set to a drill lap focused on the victim’s address.
Dawes said the video appeared to “glorify” the murder and was meant to be uploaded to the internet.
As a mitigation, Maquia was told not to participate in the making of the video by Ferguson.
The judge acknowledged that Ferguson had inflicted a fatal wound 12 cm deep, and that Maquia did not take out the knife while holding the weapon.
