As the 1990s reached its halfway point, Noel Gallagher had a mission to decide what would become of his legacy. We wanted to shape a band big enough to take over England with songs that were more true to what was going on. Noel’s mission had a specific agenda, and artists like Phil Collins weren’t on board with it.
In the early days of Oasis, Noel liked to say no other band could match his new outfit, and singled out Collins as the kind of music currently killing the charts. Before Noel put out a record maybe, He was coming for Collins’ head, as he mentioned in the documentary supersonic, “We’re going to get rid of Phil Collins, Sting, junk food music, McDonald’s music, etc. We’ve got to get in the charts and get them out. By the end of this decade, Phil Collins’ severed head will be in the fridge. I want to keep it in. If I don’t, I will fail.”
Putting Collins’ head on a stake wasn’t enough, so Noel called him the Antichrist in several interviews. When Collins heard it, he wasn’t too thrilled to be dragged through the mud by a Britpop icon. They are rude and not as talented as they think they are. They keep challenging me which I find weird.
Although Collins claimed to love music, he said their attitude was the main turnoff for him, stating in an interview: I love the Beatles and I approve of what they do. I loved music long before I knew what they were doing. ”
The animosity finally abated…a little
After his time in the Oasis sun settled down in the 2000s, Noel seemed to have a change of heart. I tell Rowe: I’ll admit, they look bad in print. I probably took a balanced view of Phil Collins that day, but the point about him being the Antichrist looks a little better. But Phil Collins knows he can’t say anything about me because I’m an idiot, and the fact that he’s bald.
During his solo career, Noel grew closer to Collins. On his YouTube channel, when asked about his favorite songs by artists he disliked, he singled out “In the Air Tonight” and branded “Another Day in Paradise” as “Damn.”despite his acrimonious remarks about the man behind Tarzan Before the soundtrack, Noel stood up for his love for Genesis, explaining: they have some good songs. But when Collins took over, I wasn’t interested in that.
In his book, Collins mentions a chance meeting with Noel while on vacation, but no olive branch was ever handed over in the last few years. Collins may have loved her pop music, but Noel’s tolerance for pop was limited, and songs like “Sussudio” fell at the other end of the line.
