Trippie Redd has spoken out about the “fragmented” hip-hop scene in relation to the growing popularity of country and Spanish music.
Spotify’s head of urban music, Carl Cherry, took to Twitter on Saturday to argue that hip-hop needs a new leader when it comes to advancing the genre.
“Hip-hop needs a new leader who deliberately sets the direction of music and culture,” he wrote. “I feel like artists either don’t think about it or don’t want to take responsibility for it. We need it. Who’s stepping up?”
After discovering the tweet, Trippie Redd countered that hip-hop was “too fragmented” by other music influences.
“Exactly,” said he. “We rebounded. We were so divided that we let country and Spanish music take over.”
he added: “Fucking lame”
