From blues to Broadway show tunes, local and visiting artists perform at several Vicksburg venues during Mighty’ Ship Fest, April 13-16.
Entertainment begins April 13 at 7:00 PM with the Vicksburg Chamber Choir paying tribute to Hollywood with a spring concert at the Southern Heritage Center Auditorium, 1302 Adams Street.
“The songs we’re about to sing are movie theme songs. Some of them are very famous award-winning movies,” said choir spokesperson Lynn Foley. “We’re kicking off the festival. .”
Foley said the choir will host a Hollywood-style reception before the 6 p.m. concert.
“Hollywood attire is highly encouraged, and choir members dress accordingly,” she said, adding that although the concert is free, donations are encouraged.
On April 14th, the Calvin Duncan Band will play an upbeat rhythm and blues program starting at noon at the South Cultural Heritage Center’s Classics in the Courtyard.
Following the courtyard classic, Mr. Shipp, winner of the International Blues Competition, will perform at the Vicksburg Convention Center at 7:00 p.m., performing a series of concerts at the Convention Center, which is part of the Vicksburg Arts and Music Fest. start. A series of outdoor concerts and the second half of the 41st Annual Alcorn State University Jazz Festival on April 15th.
“We have an amazing lineup of acts for the Art and Music Fest, and we hope you have a great time,” said Erin Southard, Executive Director of the Convention Center.
In addition to the concert, Mighty ‘Sip Fest officials said people will be able to walk along the Old Highway 80 bridge on April 15 to the music.
The Jazz Festival kicks off April 15th at 9am in the Convention Center’s Exhibit Hall.
Concerns about COVID-19 over the past three years have forced festival organizers to split the event into separate dates. The Astral Project held a workshop in Alcorn and an outdoor concert in Vicksburg.
“We plan to return to the old format of high school and college bands playing at 9:00 am, high school bands starting at 9:00 am, and college bands playing in the afternoon,” said music professor Dr. Dave Miller. . He is an Alcorn and festival organizer. “The band will be followed by a workshop featuring guest his artist at 4pm, followed by music by a jazz educator at 7pm. The headliner concert will take place at 8pm.”
Miller said the name of the featured artist was not disclosed.
The open-air concert begins at 3:00 pm and is performed by local teen band Southern Hospitality, playing a mix of rock, jazz and blues. At 4:30pm, Crackerjack will play his rock selection of classics, followed by The Fred T. Band of his blues performers from 6pm.
Chill from Vicksburg will hit the stage at 7:30pm, followed by headline acts Southern Soul and Rhythm and Blues recording artist OB Buchana on stage at 9pm.
Activities on April 16 will conclude with brunch at Watermark at 1415 Washington Street and a 2:00 pm concert by the Vicksburg Orchestra Society at Holy Trinity Church at 900 South St.
