A few months after releasing his latest album, The Bridge, Raja Kumari has arrived in India to shoot the video for the song No nazar. It’s an unusual approach, but when did Kumari stick to the conventions? , and talked about making a song come true that “I want someone to sell me.” beyonce Or Rihanna’.
Edited excerpt from the interview.
It’s not common for singers to record videos for their songs after they’re released. What brought Mumbai to do something like this?
I wanted to do something different with this album. It took 3 years to make it. I used to publish audio and video together, but this time I thought I’d try a different method. [A video is crucial] Because it shows my true identity and allows me to talk about how I see the world. This is a project about migration – what’s going on in the world [an artiste*s life].I will be back [with] The grandeur and glory of the pre-pandemic era.I had a few visions and finally I saw them [come to life].
What were you thinking while writing this album?
I focused on making music that healed me. During the pandemic, I was exhausted. So I made this for myself. Even in dark times, I was still conscious of my dharma. This album contains courageous acceptance. Five years ago people told me to pitch this song to Beyoncé or Rihanna, but I wanted to do it myself.
What do you think of Indian hip-hop culture?
It is amazing. But to say that enough has happened is not true. There is currently a shortage of female artists in the hip-hop industry. I have seen hip hop scenes in Delhi, Punjab and Bombay, but what I want is more diversity in music and more female artists in this field. Although the people are influenced by Western culture, India has established its own identity. this is good
You have collaborated with phenomenal artists such as the late Sidu Mooswara, AR Rahman and John Legend. What’s the difference in their approach?
All the artists I have worked with have helped me in my career. Rahman We try to push new artists as much as we can. As for working with John Legend, it took just four hours to record the song. In 2018 I sent a message to Sidu. After that, I sent him my vocals and he also sent me vocals. Out of nowhere, he posted the cover art. It was very special.
