When you think of country music, you probably think of Texas, Appalachia, and Nashville. You may also be familiar with Bakersfield Sound, a subgenre of country music that originated in California.
But the Pacific Northwest has a long tradition of country, from Tacoma’s honky tonks to Walla Walla’s radio shows to dancing in Whatcom County’s meetinghouses.
Washington’s mid-century country-western scene is at the center of journalist Stephanie Clifford’s new novel, The Farewell Tour. The book follows washed-up star Lillian Waters as she returns home to Walla Walla as part of her final tour.
Along the way, Waters must contend with his own alcoholism, career-ending health issues, and broken childhood memories. The book is full of cameos from unheard country stars and artists who have deeply influenced the genre.
