The 50th anniversary of hip-hop continues beyond August 11th. Hot 97 and He’s a Hip Hop Forever concert hosted by WBLS-FM on September 15th at New York City’s historic Madison Square Garden. Curated by his legendary Hot 97 DJ Funkflex, the special event will feature special guests Wu Tang Clan, Mary J. Blige, EPMD, Tyrese and Sean Paul performing alongside Mariah Carey and Maxwell. A press release for the event also promised “HOT 97 and WBLS-FM talent.”
The show also marks the night before the North American tour of Wu-Tang Clan’s New York State of Mind Tour with Nas and De La Soul. The rappers will return to New York for a stop at Barclays Center on September 27th.
Funk Flex also patched up their relationship with Wu-Tang Clan earlier this year, apologizing for a 25-year rift with the group over issues surrounding them headlining the 1997 Summer Jam. As detailed in the 2019 documentary, Wu-Tang Clan: Rats and HumansHot 97 forced the group to travel to the East Coast at their own expense and play Summerjam for free. In response, Ghostface Killer yelled, “Fuck, Hot 97!” On stage, he encouraged the audience to repeat the message.
“They wouldn’t play our records for the next decade or so,” Deck recalled in the documentary. “While they were playing Biggie songs, we weren’t involved. They were playing Nas songs and all the guys who were rocking with us at the time. It was It impacted our sales, it impacted our tours, it impacted everything, it impacted what we do.” “
‘Hip Hop Forever’ follows the annual Hot 97 summer jam, the latest featuring Cardi B along with Ice Spice, Scarlip, Lil Jay, Laura Brook, Glorilla and The The Rocks, Koi Lelei and Fivio Fallin were headliners.
Hip Hop Forever pre-sale is scheduled for Thursday, June 15th, and general admission tickets will be available from Ticketmaster on Friday, June 16th.
