This summer marks the golden anniversary of hip-hop, with a star-studded hip-hop concert at Yankee Stadium on August 11, the day the genre took shape 50 years ago.
The event will feature hip-hop legends Run-DMC Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube will headline the show. The venue will also feature performances by other hip-hop heavyweights including Fat Joe, Slick Rick, Common, Lil’ Kim, Remy Ma and TI.
The event will feature Run-DMC’s “Bottom of the Ninth…The Walk-Off” performance.
Run-DMC’s RUN said, “I’m honored to be on stage in the Bronx, the birthplace of hip-hop, to celebrate my heroes.”
The event marks the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip-hop and is held as a love letter to all those who popularized the genre and hip-hop. The concert also follows other recent events in the Bronx that recognize the upcoming anniversary and the borough’s role as its birthplace. Last month, the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts celebrated the anniversary with a “Hip-Hop Fever” concert, and KRS-One helped design a logo to celebrate the upcoming Golden Anniversary at a press conference in late April. It was announced that the creators who will do it will be open to the public.
On August 11, 1973, it was Clive Campbell, aka DJ Kool Herc, who forever changed the association between music and hip-hop in the Bronx.
It was a “back to school event” held in the now iconic 1520 Sedgwick Avenue apartment complex, where Haak began inventing the break, or breakbeat technique, through the use of a sound system, which led to breakbeats. became popular. Other artists include Afrika Bambaataa, The Bronx Crew, Universal Zulu Nation and Grand Wizard Theodore.
To pay tribute, the Hip-Hop 50 Live Concert includes the Pillars of Hip-Hop set featuring Kool Herc and Cindy Campbell, Grandmaster Kaz, Curtis Blow, Mele Mel, Roxanne Shante, Scorpio and the Sugarhill Gang .
Hip-Hop 50 Live at Yankee Stadium is co-produced by Mass Appeal, Live Nation and the New York Yankees. Ticket prices start at $5, with advance ticket sales beginning Thursday, June 8, and general ticket sales beginning Friday, June 9 at 10am.
Additional acts will be announced in the coming weeks as the line-up expands. Emmy Award winner and CEO of BASSic Black Entertainment, Adam Blackstone will serve as musical director for the dynamic, star-studded halftime show at Super Bowl LVI, joining Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and others on stage on bass guitar also played. He is managing creative music director with partner producer/keyboardist Omar Edwards.
