BET has announced the performers for the 2023 BET Awards, and the line-up is astounding. This year marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, and BET has enlisted golden age pioneers like Big Daddy Kane, Kid and Play, MC Wright, the Sugarhill Gang, Uncle Luke and Warren to celebrate with the BET Awards. I am doing my best. G joins Platinum Era All-Stars including E-40, Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Master P, Remy Ma, Trick Daddy, Trina and the Ying Yang Twins. Also included here are blog favorites like Chief Keef, Soulja Boy and Tyga.
This year’s nominees include Coco Jones, Doechii, Glorilla and Lil Uzi Vert among the cast, with more to be announced in the future. Glorilla and Drake lead all nominations, with Glo with 6 and Drake with 7, with both nominated for Album of the Year, both nominated for Best Collaboration, and Best Female. Glorilla is nominated for Hip-Hop Artist and Best New Artist. The show is scheduled to air live on Sunday, June 25 at 8:00pm ET, and BET is making announcements about the show as usual, so the WGA writers’ strike won’t have much of an impact on it. That’s it.
BET joins a long list of awards ceremonies, record labels, publications and television networks celebrating 50 years of hip-hop. For example, at the Grammys, Ran-DMC, Missy Elliott, Nelly, The Roots and others performed a 10-minute tribute to him performance. We’ll see how our version of the BET Awards is rated next Sunday.
