Community honors woman who died fighting Alzheimer’s disease, had passion for music


Baltimore – June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month.

WJZ recalls the woman who first introduced viewers to Norma Griner in March 2022.

The community of Lake Roland Park honored her life and all those who battled a debilitating illness.

“I wanted to give my mother life,” said son and caregiver Larry Griner. “I’m glad I did. When I look in her mirror, I can tell her that I’ve helped her live longer.”

Greiner died a year ago at the age of 91.

“The vast majority of people here are not family,” said Larry Greiner. “They are people who have known her for years and have given me the opportunity to meet her and experience what she has gone through over the years. ”

Greiner was a viral sensation diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, which attacks memory and other cognitive functions.

Larry Greiner said music was the best way his mother knew how to communicate.

“It opened her mind. I started paying more attention, she didn’t have Alzheimer’s because she was stimulated by the sights, sounds, smells, conversations we had.”

Now sitting on a bench in her memory. This place is Norma’s favorite pastime, overlooking a waterfall and encouraging people to just keep singing.

“Her legacy continues to grow thanks to the videos I keep sharing, and because I was able to show that the music here gave her the opportunity to remember,” said Larry Greiner. said.

Norma’s granddaughter played Norma’s favorite song.

Families are raising awareness about the disease that affects so many.

“Victims and memories remain, but I’m glad I was able to put a smile on them,” said Larry Greiner.
