Mohawk — Mohawk is a place you can blink and miss, but a local church encourages guests to stop and stay a while.
For the second consecutive summer, the Mohawk United Methodist Church hosts Music at Mohawk, a summer series of free, family-friendly musical events held on the church’s west lawn and shelter house.
Reverend Kelly O’Brien hopes families find time to enjoy a quiet summer night in a cozy little neighborhood northwest of Greenfield.
You may bring your own lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks such as non-alcoholic beverages. There is also a children’s play area nearby to keep the little ones entertained.
The music kicks off on Saturday, June 10th with a concert by up-and-coming Christian artist Anna Owens from 6-8pm.
The 17-year-old began performing original music in churches as a child and now performs at open mic events, music competitions, and public and private shows across Indiana.
Upcoming appearances include folk duo Patchwork, Christian speakers and vocalists Brian and Yvonne Hutson, and the occasional blues band. His 5th concert may be added soon.
O’Brien said the summer concert series is open to many types of music, not just Christian artists.
The overall goal is to introduce people to the quiet little area of Mohawk, an unincorporated community in Buck Creek Township dating back to 1883, while still allowing them to do something free and wholesome on a summer night. is to
“There’s nothing around this neck of the woods, but there are great venues for outdoor concerts,” O’Brien said.
“My neighbors really liked it last year and all the musicians who played last year are coming back, which is a good sign,” he said.
O’Brien was happy with last year’s concert attendance, which averaged 60 people.
“I didn’t know what was going to happen, but it worked very well,” he said. “The music was great and everyone had a lot of fun. The band was happy with the generosity people showed with the tip bins.”
O’Brien said more families will join in this year to enjoy outdoor music in a quiet rural setting, where little ones can play on the playground and older ones can toss a frisbee in the adjacent field. I hope
“This is where houses meet cornfields,” he said. “Not much traffic and not much noise. It helps a lot to relax and have a good time.”
